Drowning ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury death in the United States.
Every day, about ten people die from unintentional drownings. Of these, two are children aged 14 or younger. Among unintentional injuries, drowning is the second leading cause of death to children after motor vehicle accidents.
In some Sunbelt states such as California, Florida and Arizona, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death to children under five.
